22 Lessons I’ve Learned in My First 22 Years of Life

22 Life Lessons

Because yesterday was my 23rd birthday, I wanted to share some lessons that I have learned throughout my first 22 years of life. I hope you enjoy!

1. Have fun whenever possible

Life can be intense, crazy, dramatic, overwhelming, stressful, the list goes on. So being able to enjoy your life and have fun is super important. You are only alive in this moment right now once. Make the most of it.

2. Be kind, always

Be kind to your family, your friends, your colleagues, and even strangers. You never truly understand what a person is going through behind closed doors. Be kind, but don’t let others walk over you.

3. Stop trying to please everyone

Seriously…. stop that! Not everyone is going to like you. Not everyone is going to put in half as much effort in as you do. And that’s okay! Accept that and move on. Because the more you try to gain everyone’s approval or love or friendship or whatever it is… the less time you have for yourself. Your time is important.

4. Be selfish

Take time to learn about yourself. Do things that you enjoy. Be alone. Learn how to be the best person you can be. Love yourself. Do whatever it is that makes you happy. This is essential. Don’t forget about you.

5. Learn from your heartache

Heartbreak is going to happen in your life if it hasn’t already. You’re going to put so much love, energy, time, and effort into a relationship that will only end in pain. It’s okay to be sad, and miss that person every now and again. But take it from me… Don’t wallow, move on, and get back up. It gets better, and you will find that feeling again.

6. Don’t close people off

No matter how much heartache, disappointment, or pain you’ve experienced in your life; don’t close people off.  Learn from that situation(s) and use it to guide you for future experiences. Don’t push away the people that care. You will miss out on great friendships and love. No matter how hard it is let them in.

7. Know your worth

Do not be naive or blind through love and friendship. Never let a person take advantage of you. I don’t care if they say they “love you” or “care about you”. If they don’t show that through their actions, let them go.

 8. Spend time with your family

They were put into your life for a reason and are partially responsible for who you are today. Spend as much time with them as possible. Share stories with your cousins, hear stories from your grandparents and parents. Go out with your siblings. No matter how crazy they may be, love them with all of your heart.

9. Be there for your friends

They are there for you. It’s that simple. Love them, appreciate them, and make sure you let them know how much you care.

10. Don’t chase after anyone

Friends, significant others, anyone… If they don’t want to be apart of your life, they’re not worth it. No matter how much you care, let them go.

11.Listen to your parents

They only want what is best for you and most of the time, they are probably right.

12. Form your own beliefs and opinions

Do not be swayed by society or by what other people tell you. Form your own opinions and stand by them.

13. Don’t let anyone bring you down

I don’t care who they are, or how important they are to you. Live your life how you want to live it. Don’t let people force their opinions or beliefs on you and visa versa.

14. Take care of your body

You’re not 17 and invincible… you never were invincible! Take care of yourself and listen to your body. Eat healthy, exercise, go for walks, runs, yoga, whatever. Your body is the only one you’ve got.

15. Travel

Learn about new cultures, experience how other people live. Get out of your tiny corner of the world and explore.

16. Spend time doing what you love

Love to sing, sing. Love to read, read. Love to play sports, play sports! Who cares what other people think. No matter how busy you are, make the time to do those things.

17. You don’t have to have your entire life planned out

You’re just barely 23. You have a whole life ahead of you. Stop planning, and stressing, and wondering, and worrying. I know, easier said then done. But everything will fall into place as it’s supposed to. Remind yourself that when you’re feeling overwhelmed.

18. Accept other people’s help

You’re not alone, and you don’t have to be. Talk about what’s bothering you, don’t keep it bottled in.

19. Take responsibility for your actions

Don’t put the blame on others, you’re responsible for how you feel, what you do, and what you say. Own it.

20. Be respectful

Stop judging other people, stop gossiping, don’t be rude. Respect others, it’s that simple.

21. Keep your promises

If you don’t want other people to take advantage of you, why would you take advantage of other people? Follow through with your promises.

22. Never apologize for being who you are

As cliche as it sounds, there is no one else in this entire world that is exactly like you. Own it unapologetically.

So much yes! to all of these. Especially knowing your worth, I think that’s such a hard earned lesson- and simply put, a person who loves and cherishes you in any capacity will increase your sense of self-worth, not destroy it.
